A letter from Furuta Oribe (1544-1615) to Asano Nagamasa (1547-1611). After the Battle of Sekigahara, Asano Nagamasa often stayed in Edo under Tokugawa Hidetada. Furuta Oribe went down to Edo in August 1612 and returned to Kyoto around February of the following year, so it is highly likely that this letter was written in 1613. If so, this letter was written about two months before Nagamasa's death.
The letter says that I am grateful for the kindness shown to me during my stay in Edo, as always. In particular, when I returned from Edo, everyone accompanied me and saw me off on the way, which I will never forget. After I got on the train, I was in tears all the way to Odawara.
As for the "visit to Kyoto" mentioned in the letter, if we assume that this letter dates from 1611, Emperor Gominoo ascended to the throne in April of that year, and Tokugawa Ieyasu left Edo on March 6th.
Other letters from Oribe addressed to Nagamasa are known, and it is known that they had exchanges in tea ceremony and other areas. This letter is interesting as it gives us a glimpse into the fact that Nagamasa interacted with Oribe in Edo in his final years, and the circumstances of those interactions.
During this period, Oribe was at the height of his activities, having taught daisu tea ceremony to Hidetada in Edo in 1612.
