[Nishiyama Soin] 1605-1682 - Renga master and haiku poet of the early Edo period. Born in 1601. Served as a page to Kato Masakata, the lord of Yatsushiro Castle in Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture), and studied renga under Satomura Shotaku in Kyoto. He became a ronin when his master's position was abolished, and in 1616 became the head master of the renga studio at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. He also developed an interest in haikai, perfecting the light-hearted style of Danrin haikai, overwhelming the Teimon school. He died on March 28, 1616, at the age of 78. He was from Higo. His given name was Toyoichi. He was commonly known as Jirosaku. His haiku names included Ichiyu. His renga works include "Fushimi Senku" and haikai works include "Kabashira Hyakuku."
[Ikuta Nansui] Haiku poet, calligrapher, and painter. Born in Osaka. He studied haiku under Tokuda Nanrei, Chinese classics under Ito Joseki, Japanese classical literature and waka poetry under Iwasaki Chosei, Hirao Kansei, and Watari Tadaaki, and seal carving under Kumagai Genki. He died in 1934 at the age of 75.
