In the 13th year of Tenpyo (741), EmperorShomu issued an edict to establish a Kokubunji temple aimed at safeguarding the nation. Upon its establishment, a "shakinji sutra" was created to replicate the revered kinji sutra, resulting in the production of purple paper kinji sutras. These kinji sutras were meticulously transcribed by a skilled scribe, showcasing exceptional penmanship unrivaled among 8th-century scriptures.
The gleaming gold letters, meticulously polished by Kesei, exhibit a bold typeface devoid of individual strokes, seamlessly merging with the richly dyed purple paper. This amalgamation evokes the resplendent essence of the Tenpyo era, leaving a lingering sense of magnificence.
Due to its beauty, it has been called "the pinnacle of Tenpyo sutra copying" and has established an unshakable reputation.
