A poet of the early Edo period. He was born into a family of Mikawa samurai who had served the Tokugawa clan for generations, but after being reprimanded for violating military discipline during the Summer Siege of Osaka, he abandoned his samurai status and became a pupil of Fujiwara Seika, where he studied poetry. He then studied poetry under Fujiwara Seika. In 1641 (Kan'ei 18), he built Shisen-do at Ichijo-ji Temple in Rakuhoku and retired to the area. He enjoyed elegant friendships with prominent intellectuals of the time, such as Hayashi Razan and Gensei Shonin, and led a life of leisurely enjoyment, immersed in poetry and prose. The name Shisen-do comes from the fact that he selected 36 Chinese poets and commissioned Kano Tan'yu to paint their portraits, which were then hung on the wall. He was unique in the early Edo period, when Chinese poetry held a lower status than Confucianism, for devoting himself exclusively to poetry. His works are included in the Shinpen Fushoshu. In particular, one of the seven poems entitled "Mount Fuji" - "A peak beyond the clouds where immortals come to wander. The depths of a cave where divine dragons dwell. The snow is like powder and the smoke like a handle. The sky of the East China Sea hangs upside down like a white fan" - has become extremely famous.

Mr.Aoyama is working hard on his prototypes and comes to this hall every day to study. The view from the garden this morning was beautiful, so I composed a waka poem. He also asked for more Nara natto to be sent.
