A renga master of the late Muromachi period. His surname was Iio, but there is no definitive proof, and his origins are unknown. He entered the Buddhist priesthood at a young age, and after the age of 30, he aspired to a literary career. He studied renga under Sozei and Shinkei, and waka and classical poetry under Tono Tsuneyori and Ichijo Kaneyoshi, and later received the Kokinshu transmission from Tsuneyori. He formed friendships with nobles and shogunate officials such as Sanjonishi Sanetaka and Hosokawa Masamoto, and in 1488 became the head master of the Kitano Renga Kaisho. He compiled the Shinsen Tsukubashu with Inawashiro Kansai (1452-1510) and others, and co-wrote Minase Sangin Hyakuin. Through his numerous travels, he guided renga among local feudal lords, supporting its widespread popularity, and together with Shohaku, Socho, and their followers, he helped create the golden age of renga. A wandering poet on par with Saigyo and Basho.
