This is a New Year's greeting from Hosokawa Harukuni to Nose Samanosuke, a member of the shogunate's guard. Amid internal strife within the Hosokawa family, Harukuni was supported by the remnants of Takakuni's faction, but failed, and was forced to commit suicide in 1536. As the month of issue is listed as "leap New Year," the letter is thought to date to 1536. Hatano Bizen no Kami Hidetada, mentioned in the letter, was serving as deputy governor of Tamba in Harukuni's camp.
