A valuable relic that conveys the colors of the Asuka period to the present day.
Technicians arrived from mainland China, bringing with them new dyeing and weaving techniques. The "dip dyeing" technique, in which fabric is immersed in a decoction of plants, was added to the "surizome" method, which had been used until then, in which dye was rubbed directly onto woven fabric. Red was dyed with madder, safflower, and sappan, yellow with kariyasu and kihada, and blue with indigo. Safflower, native to the Mediterranean, and Suo, native to the south, which were not found in Japan, also began to be cultivated, and clothing colors suddenly became more vibrant. Dyeing and weaving culture was introduced to Japan along with Buddhist culture, and Japanese dyeing was perfected during the Asuka period.
In the Manyoshu, a cheerful ode to the human spirit, there is a scene in which Prince Oama, who has gone out to hunt for medicinal herbs, enthusiastically waves the sleeves of his scarlet robe to Princess Nukata. Scarlet can be said to be the color that symbolizes the Asuka period, also known as the Age of Scarlet.
Looking at the vibrant and vivid colors, you can feel the joy of the Asuka people who dyed them in any color they wanted and wore them.
