This is a truly dazzling decorative sutra, with triple gold lines drawn on navy blue paper and the entire mounting painted with clouds, flowing water, and lotus flowers in gold and silver paint. The Heart Sutra, written in gold letters on navy blue paper, is written in a calm, flowing, and neat style, and the text is arranged so that it appears to float in a gold and silver lotus pond that spreads out in the margins above and below, creating an elegant beauty. The seven metals and precious stones that are revered in the world, such as gold, silver, lapis lazuli, glass, and agate, are called shippo in Buddhism and appear when depicting the Pure Land. The navy blue paper is thought to represent lapis lazuli, and together with the gold and silver paint, the teachings of Buddha, the Heart Sutra, are adorned with shippo, depicting the Pure Land with lotus flowers made of shippo. It is said that reciting or copying the Heart Sutra will bring about great merit, and it is said that Emperor Saga copied it in gold on dark blue paper during the early Heian period when an epidemic was spreading throughout the world. Copied sutras in the same style as this scroll, with full mounting and gold letters on dark blue paper, can be found in the Edo period, including the "Emperor Reigen's Handwriting on Dark Blue Paper with Gold Ink" (Important Cultural Property). This scroll does not include a supplication, and the author is unknown, but surviving examples of such decorated sutras were created by emperors and other nobles, and this scroll was likely the supplication of a person of high status.
