Eight Views of Omi Screen 近江八景図屏風
Middle of Edo period , 17-18th century
Color on paper
Main 157 × 322 cm
Slightly damaged
The scenic spots around Lake Biwa were selected based on the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang in China, and many poems and other works depicting these scenery have been preserved.
Today, the most widely accepted theory is that the Eight Views of Omi were selected by Konoe Nobutada.
The eight views are: Awazu Clear Storm, Seta Evening Light, Mitsui Evening Bell, Karasaki Night Rain, Yabashi Return Sail, Ishiyama Autumn Moon, Katata Rakugan, and Hira Evening Snow, and this work depicts them from a bird's-eye view from the Kyoto side.
It is said to be the earliest selection of the Eight Views in Japan, and it influenced subsequent Eight Views throughout Japan.
The eight scenes include detailed depictions of Zeze Castle, a feudal lord's procession, the townscape, people passing by, and maritime trade.
The depiction is careful and detailed, and the large screen covered in gold and silver leaf is magnificent.
